The Truth
Truth: The body of real things, events, and the facts. A judgment, proposition, or idea that is true or accepted as true. The property of being in accord with fact or reality.
(Merriam – Webster)
Col. Jessup: You want answers
LTJG Kaffee: I want the truth.
Col. Jessup: You can’t handle the truth.
(Excerpt from the movie: A Few Good Men)
We all want the truth. We want the truth from our friends, family, employer, employees, politicians, the media. We just want to be told what is true and what is not. It doesn’t sound too difficult. Just tell the truth without adding any bias, innuendo, shading, or further explanation.
It’s hard to find. Maybe it’s hard to find because the “truth” can have different meanings to different people. I was eating dinner with some friends and took a bite of my burrito. I immediately thought it was spicy hot. When I asked my friend across the table what he thought he said, “I actually was just looking for some hot sauce.” My palette’s “truth” about what is hot was not what my friends was. He wasn’t lying, nor was I, we were telling “our truth” as we saw and felt it.
In chapter 3 of my book, I talk about the people who you want to have around you (p73 – 76). I list two traits:
“First, they have your best interest in mind when you ask them their opinion.
Second, they aren’t afraid to tell you the truth.
Not “their truth”, or a truth that is advantageous to them and maybe not so good for you.
The truth and nothing but.” (pg. 73 – Move or Die)
What I am speaking about is the difference between the truth that you WANT to hear and the truth that you NEED to hear.
