Navigating Chaos with Grace: The Indomitable Spirit of Three Remarkable Women

I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul.

- William E. Henley, Invictus

Life can be a rollercoaster ride filled with ups, downs, twists, and turns. Each of us faces struggles, whether personal, professional, or familial. Today, I want to shine a light on three incredible women who embody resilience and illustrate the superpower of resilience. From a talented clown who brings joy, a former assistant battling cancer, and a dedicated bodybuilder facing family health challenges, these stories remind us that even the strongest among us sometimes struggle.

Celebrating Nancy: Lead With a Smile

Nancy has been a vibrant part of my life since I was eight. When I moved to Mason City, Iowa, I quickly learned she wasn't just any ordinary person; she was an extraordinary “little person” with boundless talent and creativity. She has always played the role of an older sister—a guiding force as my life’s foundation was being built. I quickly learned that the only thing “little” about Nance was her height; she has a heart bigger than Texas and a tenacious, competitive streak that rivals many of the great athletes I have worked with.

However, what truly sets Nancy apart is her role as a professional clown. Her ability to bring laughter and joy to others is remarkable. Her art, “Clowning Around”, may seem light-hearted, but it takes immense skill and emotional intelligence to connect with people through humor. Nancy teaches us that laughter can be a powerful remedy for life's struggles.

However, even someone as joyful as Nancy faces challenges. Like all of us, she has her own battles, be it juggling the physical toll that her work commitments take on her body or navigating several recent surgeries, nothing can steal her zeal for life and to see the smiles from her audience. This highlights that even those who brighten our days sometimes need support.

Leslie's Battle: Courage Amidst Adversity

Leslie was not just an assistant; she was one of the best coaches I’ve had the privilege of working alongside in my 35-year career. Her energy is infectious, her communication skills are top-notch, and her drive inspires everyone around her. Today, she serves as an athletic director at a college in California—a position earned through hard work and dedication.

Recently, Leslie received shocking news: she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. This news left me reeling; how could such a strong woman face such a formidable opponent? Yet Leslie exemplifies inner strength as she navigates this arduous journey.

What stands out is her courage. Instead of giving up, she has continued to move her needle forward. Too often, when we get bad news and our lives seem to be in chaos, it is easy to step away and focus on oneself instead of continuing to live. Leslie not only deals with the mental and physical trials that go along with her treatment, but she seamlessly runs an athletic department while being the cornerstone of her family. She is amazing! Leslie reminds us that strength is not something that everyone sees. Sometimes, it's continuing forward when everything is telling you to stop.

Lisa's Journey: Balancing Strength with Family Needs

In my coaching career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many incredible athletes, but Lisa shines brightly among them. At 63 years old, a five-foot-tall bundle of energy is one of the most technically sound weightlifters I’ve coached. After placing third in her first bodybuilding contest last year, we set out to refine her skills further.

However, as this year's bodybuilding meet approached, Lisa encountered unexpected hurdles regarding health issues within her family. This shift redirected her focus away from training toward caring for loved ones in distress—a testament to her loyalty and love.

Lisa’s story is significant because it shows how life’s pressures can affect our passions and goals. Like Nancy and Leslie, Lisa exhibits an often-overlooked strength: the strength of sacrifice. Instead of spending hours on her lifting, conditioning, dieting, and posing, she set that aside to take care of her family.

Three Powerful Women

I am fortunate to have three extraordinary women as very good friends who live life as it is meant to be lived. Each has faced formidable challenges, yet none have succumbed to despair or questioned their circumstances with a “Why me?” Instead, they embody a champion’s mindset, skillfully playing the hand they have been dealt and striving to emerge victorious.

We all have to deal with our share of turmoil; it is an inevitable aspect of the human experience. We are not unique in our struggles when “shit happens.” What distinguishes us, however, is our response to these trials. Do we retreat into ourselves, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty, or do we rise to the occasion, determined to navigate through the chaos? The defining power of these three women lies in their unwavering ability to confront challenges head-on, managing their responsibilities with grace and tenacity.

Their stories remind us (to paraphrase Nelson Mandela) that true strength is not merely the absence of struggle but rather the courage to confront it. They handle their affairs with a remarkable blend of determination and poise, refusing to allow life’s obstacles to dictate their paths. In a world where adversity can easily lead to resignation, these women stand as beacons of hope and inspiration, illustrating that resilience is not just a trait but a conscious choice.

In celebrating their journeys, we recognize that power resides not solely in triumphs but also in how we handle our hard times. Their examples encourage us all to embrace our challenges with fortitude, reminding us that while we may not control our circumstances, we hold the power to shape our responses.

Finding the Courage Within

Working through challenging periods in life can often feel overwhelming, leaving individuals questioning their resilience and capacity to endure. However, during these times, discovering one’s inner strength becomes paramount. Here are a few ways to help you build and use this strength during adverse times.

1. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Reflection: Finding time to dig deep inside ourselves, such as meditation or journaling, allows individuals to connect with their thoughts and emotions more deeply. By taking a step back and reflecting on your experiences, you can gain clarity regarding your feelings and identify the sources of your strength. This practice promotes emotional well-being and leads to a greater understanding of oneself.

2. Set Achievable Goals: I have found that setting small, manageable goals can create a sense of purpose and direction during hard times. These objectives should be realistic and attainable, allowing one to experience success during the process. Each accomplishment, no matter how minor, reinforces your confidence and reminds you of your capability to overcome challenges.

3. Seek Support from Others: During tough times, it is crucial to have the support of others as you move through the chaos. Reach out to friends, family, or professionals who can provide guidance and encouragement. Sharing your experiences with others reduces feelings of isolation and gives new perspectives that may help you identify your strengths.

4. Look for the Get To’s: A positive mindset is a powerful tool for reshaping negative thought patterns. By consciously replacing self-doubt with positive self-messaging that highlights your strengths and capabilities, you can find the Get To opportunities that strengthen your resiliency. Regularly reminding yourself of your worth and potential can significantly enhance your ability to cope with adversity.

5. Engage in Physical Activity: Move or Die is part of our genetic code. Physical activity is beneficial for physical health and vital to mental well-being. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress levels. Whether through yoga, running, or simply taking a walk, movement can empower you to confront challenges with renewed vigor.

Captain of Your Soul

Together, these three examples of the strength of the human spirit illuminate a fundamental truth: even the strongest individuals encounter moments of vulnerability. The lessons we take from their experiences remind us that it is through embracing our challenges—whether through laughter, resilience, or sacrifice —that we can emerge stronger and more united in the face of adversity. We are encouraged to own our struggles while celebrating the strength found within ourselves and each other to overcome them.

Have an amazing day!
