Invest in Positive Relationships

Friends: It’s not the quantity, but the quality that matters.

- Alison Bailey

Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling more exhausted than when you entered? Or perhaps you've found yourself dreading interactions with certain people in your life. It’s time to take a step back and reevaluate the relationships we invest our time and energy into. Life is too short to spend it with individuals who drain our spirit!

We were out for dinner recently, and the table behind us was not using their “inside voices”. Well, I should say, one of the people at the table wanted everyone to be part of her public therapy session. This woman was not happy about anything or anybody. She kept tossing out doom and gloom stories from her week. When other individuals at her table tried to give her advice or to change the subject, the woman would have none of it. Telling her companions they were wrong or bringing the conversation back to her issues.

All I could think was, “Why are you out with this person?”

We all have baggage, so why does anyone think we should also carry their baggage? And that’s where this blog started. Why do we stay connected with people who never see the Get To’s?

The Power of Energizing Relationships

The people we spend time with significantly impact our emotional well-being. Think about it: some people light up a room with positivity and enthusiasm (Get To), while others leave us feeling weighed down (Got To). Energizing relationships boost our mood, productivity, and personal growth. Here are some characteristics of uplifting connections:

·       Supportive: They celebrate your successes and encourage you during tough times.

·       Positive Energy: They exude enthusiasm and inspire you to chase your dreams.

·       Trustworthy: You feel safe sharing your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Surrounding yourself with these types of individuals creates an environment where you can flourish personally and professionally. These people put the wind in your sails and push you forward each day as you move through your journey.

Identifying Draining Relationships

On the flip side, we all come into contact with people who seem to drain our energy rather than give us momentum. Identifying these draining connections is crucial for maintaining balance in your life. Here are some signs to watch for:

·       Constant Negativity: Conversations often focus on bitching and whining.

·       Lack of Balance: You feel like you're always giving without receiving support in return.

·       Toxic Behaviors: This includes manipulation, criticism, or controlling tendencies.

When we recognize the difference between the two, it is easy to understand how aligning with one group rather than the other can be a life-changing opportunity.

Taking Action: How to Foster Energizing Connections

Now that we've established the difference between energizing and draining relationships, let’s talk about actionable steps to cultivate positive connections:

1. Reflect on Your Circle: Take inventory of your current relationships. Who brings joy? Who feels like a burden? Harvest the ones that lift and support you, and dump those that burden your soul.

2. Communicate Openly: If someone in your life is unintentionally draining your energy, consider discussing how their behavior affects you. Clear communication can lead to a healthier.

3. Invest Time Wisely: Prioritize spending time with individuals who inspire you. Schedule regular catch-ups with friends who lift your spirits!

4. Set Boundaries: Don’t hesitate to create space between yourself and those who consistently bring negativity into your life.

5. Seek New Connections: Invite friends from your hobbies (Gyms, Court Sports, Golf, Card or Game Clubs) to join you at other events. Because of your common interests, you may find kindred spirits.

Life is too precious to be spent in relationships that drain our energy! By investing in uplifting connections, we not only enhance our own lives but also contribute positively to the lives of others. So, take action today—evaluate your relationships, nurture those that energize you, and don't let go of those that hold you back. Remember, every positive relationship is an investment in your happiness! Start surrounding yourself with the right people now; the results will astound you!

Have an amazing day!
