Relentless

Being the best is not an easy path.  Being the best is a relentless task. It is time-consuming. It is hard. It is lonely. Are you still in?  Most people have already run away screaming.  Most want to be successful by merely showing up. The intern who bitches because he doesn’t have a seat at the big table.  The junior executive who is three weeks behind on his reports, because he was too busy running the office March Madness bracket, and is surprised when he gets passed by for promotion. The new CEO who came back to work after taking two weeks off in Italy to find that his company is nearly bankrupt because of budgetary mismanagement.

It happens at all levels, people who have moved within the system are finding it tough sledding when they are forced to do the work required of their new position. The request to “give more” gets a blank stare in return. “But I get to work on time and I clock out at five? Isn’t that enough?”

Being relentless means, you don’t work on a clock. You work for the company as if it is your own personal business. I recently read an article that said in an 8-hour workday the average worker will only work for FOUR of those eight hours. That’s not you … right? You have never checked your personal email, Facebook, or Instagram during work hours, right? You have never left a little earlier for lunch because it’s hard to get a seat at the restaurant. You’ve never used time at work to look up hotels for a vacation, checked your fantasy league numbers or your picks in the basketball bracket? You’ve never left work early to get to your nail appointment, because you needed them done for Friday night.

But you had all of your work done, right? So, what does it matter? What if this is your business, how would you feel if half of the money you gave out was not earned? I’m willing to bet that if the job takes longer than your eight-hour day, you will put in for overtime, right? Do you ever put in for “undertime” and give money back to your employer? Of course not. But think about it the next time you sneak out the back door to beat traffic. Are you being the best are what you are doing, or are you just getting by? Being the best is relentless!!
